​The CCHI Secretary-General, Mr. Mohammad ibn Sulaiman Al-Hussein, revealed that the claims paid by the health insurance companies to healthcare providers exceeded SR 15.3 billion and that the total health insurance premiums subscribed reached SR 18.9 billion by the end of last year. The number of insured Saudis was more than 2.73 million, hitting 23% of the total number of the insured that, by the end of 2017, was 12.057 million. The number of expatriates covered by health insurance services was 9.3 million, comprising 77% of the total number of the insured who are provided with health services as individuals and families. The services are provided through an integrated medical network that reached by the end of 2017 more than (4358) CCHI-accredited healthcare providers, (27) health insurance companies, and (9) claims management CCHI-qualified companies.
Al-Hussein noted that despite the economic conditions and changes that contributed to the decline of the insurance sector in general by about 4.8%, the health insurance sector witnessed a slight growth. He explained that this industry had by the end of 2017 more than 52% of the insurance market share, while three insurance companies continued to acquire 79% of this market.
Al-Hussein proceeded, "In light of the CCHI 2020 strategy emanating from the Saudi vision 2030, the CCHI continued to ensure the successful implementation of the health insurance law by stimulating, developing and expanding the Saudi health insurance sector. This is to ensure keeping pace with the steady growth in demand for its products that is simultaneous with the present and noticeable growth in other sectors in the Kingdom."
Al-Hussein talked about the expectations of health insurance to achieve qualitative development in the application of health insurance and coverage of all categories that fall under the law in 2018. The quality and comprehensiveness of health insurance are sought to meet the expectations of the Kingdom's leadership, the Kingdom’s vision (2030) and the requirements of future health policy.
